The Gower Project – Life in Common

The project is to provide funding over a 3 year period to improve several commons on the Gower peninsula, through management, restoration & education. The sites link to form 1,728ha of heathland/acid grassland & Purple moor grass pastures.

The declining ‘farm’ management of the Gower commons led to a 3 year pilot project which formed a partnership (National Trust, City & County of Swansea, Gower Commoners, Association, Countryside Council of Wales) to assess the threats to & plan the future potential management of the Gower Peninsula, the UKs first designated Area of Natural Beauty (AONB – 1956).

Project costs include Project Liaison Officer & Heathland Warden costs for 3 years, which include associated core costs that have been directly attributed to this project. The PLO & HW will practically undertake the project works (overseeing where required – use of external contractors, volunteers etc) which includes management of 913 ha of habitat & restoration/re-creation of a further 815ha of habitat
