Solar Power Installation: Scout Hut Renovation, 21st Wyre Forest (Franche) Scout Group, Worcs

This is a project to install 16 solar panels, a hybrid converter, and three batteries at 21st Wyre Forest Scout Group Hut.

The scout group moved into Franche Scout Hut a year ago. It was majorly run down. The asbestos roof leaked. It was full of 50 years accumulated ‘stuff’. The heaters were noisy and ineffective. The lighting was dull and the old curtains damp. Around £38k has been spent to date replacing the roof, lights, heaters, decorating, new water heater etc. The next stage is to put carpet tiles down and install solar heating.

The project has already benefitted the 80 Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and the next step is to open it up for community use. The hut is looking great, and locals are all making great comments. Solar panels and batteries will enable the hut to use renewable energy and become self-sufficient.

This project will mean that the group will not have to worry about finding funds for electricity in the future. Along with the fact that the hut has been purchased outright and therefore no rent to pay, the hut will be self-sustaining. This will enable the group to be in a position to offer exciting activities to young people without the worry of constantly asking parents for more funding. The group will be able to keep the high standards that it has spent the past year creating and not have to worry about keeping the young people and community members warm in the winter. The whole project will be a lasting legacy.
