Restoration and Management of the Millennium Wetlands at the NWCW

The Millennium Wetlands (40 hectares) is a diverse matrix of freshwater wetland habitats. This project will restore and enhance existing wetlands, and prevent their succession to drier habitats. Work will include removal of scrub and saplings from wetland areas, opening-up of banks adjacent to open water, clearing islands and reducing tree cover around large scrapes. This will encourage emergent vegetation, improve sightlines for water birds and provide a range of ground cover suitable for different species of breeding wader. Lines of trees which currently divide up the main reedbed will be removed. Scrub and wooded areas will be maintained in appropriate places including management of wet woodlands.
