RAF Defford Heritage Centre

In 1940 Croome Court was requisitioned by the Government from the Earl of Coventry to construct RAF Defford. The air station was central to the development of airborne radar, which was vital in helping the Allies win the war.

There are still several buildings standing from the period which are on the National Trust owned estate at Croome. This complex of buildings were originally part of the hospital unit of the airbase. Some of the buildings have been restored and are now used as visitor facilities at Croome, however, some remain in a derelict state.

This project will restore the ‘decontamination annex’, so that it can then be used to house an exhibition that will tell the story of the work of RAF Defford in World War 2 and the early part of the Cold War to the local community.
