Protecting the Pilling Moss Peatlands

Birch House Farm is a key site in the protection of Winmarleigh Moss, providing a buffer around this SSSI site to protect the sensitive lowland raised bog. This project would allow us to purchase the remaining 35.8 hectares of farmland to extend the area of buffer zone around this core reserve and restore hydrological function across a wider peat mass. The long-term plans to rewet the land would allow us to protect the substantial peat soils as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are contributing to the climate crisis, and boost the site’s flora and fauna biodiversity.
