Fray’s River Floating Pennywort Removal

This project is to employ a professional contractor to remove floating pennywort, an invasive species, from the Fray’s River in Uxbridge.

The aim of the project is too remove Floating pennywort, which grows extremely fast, forming dense mats on the water surface which can crowd out native plants, reduce oxygen levels for fish, block waterways, impede boat navigation, and potentially increase flood risk due to its ability to obstruct water flow; essentially disrupting the ecosystem.

The Fray’s River at this point is too deep and fast flowing to enter to remove the pennywort by hand. The pennywort mats have further become too thick and heavy for volunteers to remove via canoe.

The works will allow the local river ecosystem to recover protect the environment, reduce the risk of flooding, and improve how local people experience nature along the River Fray’s.
