Carmel’s Ancient Woodland Treasures

To restore woodland management to areas of ancient woodland within Carmel National Nature Reserve, which has been neglected since 1960s, for the benefit of biodiversity, landscape, communty involvement, and the local economy. The area of Carmel NNR managed by The Grasslands Trust includes some of the richest ancient semi- natural woodland in the UK, but neglect has resulted in scrub encroachment into ancient wildflower glades within the wood. Restoring management will benefit the woodlands and restore the unusual grassland plant communities and associated invertebrate populations. Project activities will include coppicing, thinning, management of woodland edges, and management of scrub. The project will directly contribute to local, regional and national BAP targets for priority species and habitats.
