Environmental Regulator Mucks-in to Support Northwest Beach Litter Project

Tuesday, 26 August 2008

Staff at ENTRUST, the Sale-based regulator of the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF), will be packing their beach clothes away and slipping on the gloves to clear litter on the Sefton coast all day on Thursday 4th September 2008.

The work at Birkdale Beach is in support of the Northwest Beach Litter Project and is in keeping with ENTRUST’s general commitment to supporting environmental causes.

Christopher Welford, Chief Executive of ENTRUST, said: “It’s exactly this type of local project which the LCF supports, so I am delighted for us all to be involved in supporting the local community at the beach.”

“A well as clearing up the shore, , I hope our hard work might encourage others to get involved with some form of voluntary work for their community.”

The LCF can support a wide range of community projects as long as they meet certain criteria under the Landfill Tax Regulations 1996.

Conservation schemes, church restoration work, playgrounds, public footpaths and community centres are just a few examples of projects which might be eligible for funding under the Landfill Tax Regulations and ENTRUST encourages those with a project in need of funding to visit the website.

• Christopher Welford is available for interview on the day via prior appointment.

• ENTRUST is a not-for-profit company established in 1996 and appointed as the Regulator of the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF). Unlike other regulatory bodies, it is in the unique position that it is not a Government department, or agency.

• The principle of the LCF is that it 'offsets' some of the negative impacts of living very close to a landfill site. This is done by allowing the Landfill Operators to contribute up to 6% of their landfill tax liability to not-for-profit organisations that deliver benefits to the general public or the environment. The Landfill Operator can then reclaim 90% of this contribution as a tax credit.

• ENTRUST does not distribute LCF funds itself. Environmental Bodies must apply either to Distributive Environmental Body (A list of potential funders searchable by geographical area is available on the ENTRUST website) or go direct to a Landfill Operator.

• To date, ENTRUST has overseen expenditure in excess of £850 million directly on the delivery of projects that benefit local communities.

• Over 2,500 Environmental Bodies are enrolled with ENTRUST.

• A searchable database of projects registered with ENTRUST is available at:
http://www.entrust.org.uk/home/facts-and-figures/project-search

• LCF money may be distributed to projects which meet certain criteria under the Landfill Tax Regulations 1996 and which are concerned certain aims, including:

• Providing Public Amenity
• Conservation of Biodiversity
• Restoration of Religious Buildings or Buildings of Architectural or Historical Interest
• Remediation of Polluted Land
• Reduction of Pollution

• Northwest Beach Clean is taking place on Wednesday 3rd September 2008 at Hightown, Ravenmeols and Birkdale beaches.
